Recommendation to a friend of mine :)

“Should I abandon this small company, which has just been founded for 4 months, to join that bigger company with higher salary, more professional working environment, and , clearer flow of process?” My friend's question to me last night, to ask for recommendation, also made me think a lot about my future, especially my upcoming work after graduating this Jan 2010. It's true, in market, some people would love to work in an huge cooperations, multinational companies or those which have their brands in national and worldwide stock market, while not a small number of prefer to join in a smaller company, which less reputation.
So what is the pros and cons of working for both types of companies?
As their names, multinational companies, or high reputatble organizations, they have clear flow of processes, detailed tasks in each of the office and department that will never, or less overlap to one another. Working for them, that means you will never doubt or worry about your role in the company. Since their process flow have been accredited and proved to be successful throughout their business time, then, and you will never be complained about your acts against company's policies if you just follow what has been set for one task. For those who would like to work in a professional working environment where everything is clear and not overlapped to other work, this type of companies is for you. Likewise, with high reputation, their annual income will be higher with other companies in the same business segmentation, that will bring about your higher income than others'.
But, to those big companies, their flows of processes would be strictly followed and implemented. Any of one process's step is left or is done wrongly would bring about the catastrophic loss to companies. You are not the one who feels comfortable with strict deadline, ontime work, serious manner, or you expects those works that need creativities and personal manner, I don't think this type of companies will be suitable for you :)
On the contrary, with smaller companies, things will be different, and seem opposited to those above. In small companies, everything is just like it has been started. From flow of processes, departments' roles, employee's tasks.. everything needs to be shaped and developed, and you will be the one who contributes to that process. From your work, companies will learn from experiences what should be implemented, and what should be abandoned next time. You will feel a bit uneasy facing with conflict everyday, but in fact, throughout these works, you can learn a lot more. You can even learn from your experiences, or collect from others' success and failures. It will help to sharpen yourself so that you can easily solve the problem you cope with in the future. Those precious experiences is far more valuable to ony barter with small salary you will earn.
My friend, you have just graduated since August 2009. I don't think money is that necessary though. Keep working in that company, facing with daily conflict and contradiction, you will be matured faster. With a your type, the amount of salary of 1500USD in just the matter of time. Try your best to sharpen yourself , and use that sharp sword to battle with winds and waves in the near future :)
