My indeliberate thinking style last night at Starbuck coffee shop yesterday led me to the movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley”, via my friend's reference to a main actor in the film. It's my luck.. or my destiny? :-D
Steve Jobs – the young naughty student from University of Beckerly – turned out to be the inborn talent with his first innovation, the revolution of Worldwide computer industry at that time. Things seemed easy to him with his first Apple incorporation initially. The man with nothing in hand except the Apple computer (Computer? Personal Computer? Could you believe it, and imagine what the hell it is at that time?) ran into the world most focusing reputation.
Bill Gates – student from Harvard University who loved to sleep or gather with friends for poker – became the world wealthiest person with the world leading software and operating system company Microsoft.
Both of them were the one who contributed to reshape and change the world IT market in this 20th century.
With the heart of Apple – Lisa – Steve Jobs and his incorporation were leading the world computer market, left the small portion for the so-called “big brother” IBM. Apple culture with severe regulation and strict standard devoted to the IT community its art and beauty from products. Never satisfied with what he owned, Steve always forced his employers under the pressure, with the purpose of the unique IT product manufacturer.
At that time, Bill Gates and Microsoft were just like the little man in the eye of the giant Apple. He couldn't even persuade Apple to the contract of Apple software supplying branch. Nevertheless, his first invention of DOS operating system for the most reputable IBM computer altogether brought him and Microsoft to the blaze of glory in US and the world. They now both knew each other. Microsoft and Apple, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
“Good painter copies – Great painter steals” - Steve Jobs.
While there was no one took the idea of Graphic User Interface (GUI) and Mouse from Xerox considerably, Steve and Apple were the first one and only one came to Xerox office and conferred. Steve, the man of the future, re-structured the world with Macintosh, the first machine implemented GUI in operating and controlling system.
“Put your friend close – Put your enemy even closer” - Bill Gates.
Realizing the catastrophic threats could happen to Microsoft, Bill Gates once again went back to Apple to deal for the contract of developing Apple softwares. Steve, who trusted in Bill without any attentive consideration, accepted Microsoft to develop softwares for Apple, and gave Macintosh prototype to Microsoft.
Along with supplying the “blood and flesh” for the “skeleton” Macintosh, Microsoft implicitly created new product with the concept of “Windows”, based on the prototype of Macintosh GUI and Mouse idea. That cagey strategy from Microsoft brought the typhoons towards Apple, and helped to bring the image of Microsoft to the world IT market with glory and reputation.
“We are the family”
Nowadays as we all know, Microsoft and Apple are always the world focusing and leading incorporation not only in computer and software, but also in recreation zone, and much more.
The end of the movie also left something inside the audience, for them to look backwards, to think thoroughly about life matter with friends and competitors.
In your life, work with your competitors, cooperate with your competitors, beam with your competitors, clasp your competitors, but don't ever trust your competitors. Today they could be your friends for the sake of your company, tomorrow they could stab the knife towards your gut.
